shadsy: link from legend of zelda in a SOLDIER (FF7) uniform (limit breaker link)
yeah i've had THIS bouncing around in my head lately

i'm willing to put this into limit breaker 'verse because i think it will be juicier. i did a thing where cloud suddenly gets separated and it was SUPER melodramatic, but i think i can work some perspective back in here.
  • we start with cloud in his home, a post AC world. it's been a year since everyone in the smash house was sent "home". it's been implied that there were some adjustments, but cloud has reintegrated into his home universe pretty well. cloud, tifa, and barrett all live together with denzel and marlene in edge.
  • tifa and barrett are more of an item and it's clear they love cloud and would like to integrate him as well, but cloud is a little closed off. they have fooled around together and cuddled but he will not make it official. they were close before he left, but he left for the equivalent of perhaps the better part of a decade and got into a serious relationship that he will never have again. they're willing to let this lie but they would hope he opens up a little more
  • cloud carries a ring from link but wears it around his neck now
  • there's a meteor strike in the night, and the gang decides to check it out. it leaves a pretty big hole.
  • um. cloud falls in the hole.
  • cloud wakes up with a sleeping wolf pack in the middle of hyrule field in nothing but his undershorts
  • something something link and zelda discover him there and bring him to lookout landing. the timing is VERY shortly before the beginning of totk
  • zelda does a lot of talking. cloud is nearly speechless but this is his SECOND time being transported to another world so he kind of knows this rodeo
  • he can tell this is not the princess zelda he knew from before. she looks quite different for one, and her whole demeanor is different. but there is something very endearing about her
  • but link. link. LINK. he can't keep his eyes off him. he looks like HIS link (since his link went through a costume change in the smash house)
  • internally he is losing his mind. he KNOWS he doesn't recognize him because he knows how he would light up if he did (his heart aches thinking about this)
  • no this is not his link. this link Talks. not much, but definitely not writing on a notebook or signing regularly. this zelda does a lot of talking for him, but it's in a different way
  • (he talks just like cloud imagined if his link spoke a little louder) (his heart hurts again)
  • they get to lookout landing and get him some clothes. he can't really explain much of how he got there, but saying he "fell from the sky" prompts zelda to gush about her research on the zonai.
  • link is looking at her fondly as she does this. cloud can't blame him but now he's feeling queasy
  • he tells them that he's a capable swordsman and can accompany them if need be. he is desperate to
  • zelda thanks him and says she'll keep him in mind. he believes her, but it's very likely that she's just being polite
  • before she takes off, link lingers behind and sort of eyes cloud with question. cloud's mouth is so dry. he looks just like him!! he thought he had gotten over him but he hasn't. not at all. ow. OUCH.
  • link says something to the effect of "if there's something you'd like to say to me, please do so" --he knows he's been staring
  • cloud mumbles that he looks like someone he was close to, and then says he needs to lie down. because he does
  • the next day link and zelda leave to explore hyrule castle and then all of everything happens
  • cloud keeps himself busy by offering his monster hunting services and kind of integrates himself into lookout landing. he also tries looking for link (and zelda) when they are presumed missing
  • when link reappears without a) his hearts b) his whole arm c) his girlfriend and d) his sword, cloud catches up with him and offers to travel with him to find zelda
  • they travel together, they get closer. link tells him stories about zelda and the kingdom. cloud tells him about his own world. zelda reminds him of aerith in a strange way--he thinks they would get along. now he misses aerith too. he's full of loose threads that have been severed out of his control. he remembers that there were those in his home that wanted to tie them, and now they're gone too. this keeps happening!
  • they have a clumsy tryst one night. they haven't made any progress on finding zelda but link mentions that the three of them could live together when they find her. it sounds nice
  • things are starting to unravel, though. it's becoming apparent that cloud isn't supposed to be here. the cities that have problems can't even be entered to help (i.e. rito village blizzard is too severe, same for the sandstorm in gerudo town, goron city is blocked by a gloom avalanche and zora's domain is caked in sludge). cloud is uneasy. he can't stay.
  • they go into the lost woods and get very lost, but stumble into the chasm there. up to this point, they haven't gone into the depths. cloud falls in and link tries to catch him, but link tells him to let go. "i need to go back so you can save this land and find your zelda. please remember me. i love you." and he falls
  • link dives after him but only finds the depths; cloud is gone
  • cloud falls and falls until he hears tifa talking to him. he wakes up in a hospital cot. he's been unconscious for five days.

ugh actually not sure if i like a returning to status quo story like this. i've done it a few times with other things, but it would definitely end on a downer here and not sure if i want that. the other thought is link and zelda and cloud get more time together before the hyrule castle mission and things just sort of end there. i would have a zelda/link/cloud poly. maybe the WHOLE story takes place before TOTK and we play it like that. not sure.

not sure if i'll even be able to write such a thing; i've been working on my music lately so haven't had the writer brain. haven't had the time or focus to write longform stuff as much. but it'll be something i can come back to if i'm feeling into it

Cloud hadn't spoken a word to anyone all day.

The night had come with terrifying dreams that didn't make any sense to him--shapes and violent colors in a cacophony that assaulted his sleeping senses. He woke up in a cold sweat, shaking as he clutched his chest. When Link rolled over, holding his side, and gently whispered "are you okay" into his ear, his voice stayed stuck behind his teeth, and he shook his head.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Link asked.

Again, Cloud shook his head, shrinking into a ball on the bed. And with that, Link spooned him, holding him close until sleep took over once again.

But the morning came, and over breakfast, he only pushed around his food, dark circles marking creases underneath his eyes. "How do you feel?" Link signed, somehow managing to balance his fork within his fingers.

Cloud shook his head. "I feel awful," he replied with his hands. "I had a bad dream. I can barely remember it, but I know it was awful."

"I'm sorry, baby."
The endearment was signed close to his chest, close to his heart. "Do you want to take the day off?"

"No, I can't."
Cloud looked off as he continued to sign. "I need to stay strong."

Link reached over the table and waved his hand in front of Cloud's face to draw his attention. "You already are strong. You don't have to act so tough all the time. I promise."

Cloud felt the weight of everything fall on his shoulders, and all he could do was sigh. It was easy to put up the front, to pretend that nothing was wrong, but it was also so exhausting. "I know," Cloud ended up signing as he stood up. He passed around behind Link and dragged his fingertips along his shoulders. He waited until Link was watching him before he finished his sentence. "But this is all I know."

With that, he went to his drills.

Practicing with a sandbag was one thing, and against generated fighters was another, but Cloud knew the only way to get stronger was to practice against real opponents. And through several rounds, he spoke not a word, focusing on the way his sword slashed in front of him--the angle, the precision needed to get the most out of every attack. It was a focus that he welcomed.

His last fight before he retired for the day was with a quick-footed and scatterbrained Sonic, dashing at Cloud's feet. "Hey, what's gotten into you?" he asked. "I know you're the tough and silent type, but this is something else!"

Cloud replied with a swift jab to his stomach, and followed with a cross slash that sent him flying off stage to end the match.

With the lobby buzzing with post match activity, Cloud retreated to one of the last quiet places in the mansion, a place where quiet was a necessity. Down the second hallway, the first door on the right. The smell of books made him clear his throat, but he still sighed with relief.

The library.

Ganondorf was already at his desk at the front, and he eyed Cloud from above his reading glasses. "I don't see you here often," he remarked.

Before he could stop himself, he was already signing. "I just want some quiet," he signed, then his hands seized, and he clenched them down at his sides.

"You don't want to talk either?"

Ganondorf's voice always had a sinister edge to it, regardless of what he was saying, but the comment dug deep into Cloud's chest. His heart pounded in his ears, but even as he wanted to say something, his voice wouldn't say it, and the vague memories from the dream trumped his ability to speak. Instead, humiliated, he hissed air through his teeth.

He stared down at him for a moment, an excruciating moment longer. "I saw Link go in the back," he said. As he spoke, he spelled "L-I-N-K", and pointed down the left back aisle.

Cloud bit his cheek and followed where he pointed. Why the hell would he do that? That bait and switch, he thought. Sometimes, I think he can't help it.

It didn't take him long to find Link, even though he was tucked in the very back of an aisle--his bright blue tunic gave him away. He smiled kindly at him and gave him a wave, and the relief that washed over Cloud was palpable. There were no other seats besides the stool Link was sitting on, so Cloud settled on sitting at his feet, letting his head loll back and stare at the ceiling.

"How were drills?" Link signed.

"Okay," Cloud replied. "I think my low sweeps are getting better."

"That's good."

Cloud leaned against Link's knee, and let his fingers absently speak for him. "Does it ever get easier? I'm so tired of having fragments of the past that I don't understand anymore come and haunt me."

Link sighed audibly. "I think it does," he replied, then looked directly down at him. "I think you've been through a lot more than a lot of us, too."

He cocked his head. "You think so?"

"You're the only one who struggles with memory problems like this,"
Link signed. "It's more than the mansion will do. It's traumatic."

Cloud mouthed an "oh", and a deep sigh went through him that drooped his shoulders. He tried to remember the dream he had the night before, but the more he tried to capture it, the more it slipped away. The more it slipped away, the more trivial were the emotions that came with it. For the first time that day, he felt truly calm.

"I think I get why you don't talk," Cloud signed. "I understand it more, anyway."

Link snickered to himself with a little nod, then stroked back Cloud's hair and signed with one hand. "The quiet is nice. But, I like your voice."

"I like yours too,"
Cloud signed back on impulse, although his fingers slowed at the end of his delivery, and his face flushed.

"I know," Link signed. "I only give it to those I trust.

and I trust you."

Their eyes met, accompanied by soft smiles, and sealed by a gentle kiss in the silence of the library.

playing world of light last night and thinking about clink of course

i can't believe i found cloud at the shrine of the master sword, that's completely! feeding into my agenda!

here's a little something:
  • link arrives into world of shadow with dharkon overseeing it--he's been fighting and fighting for a while and a little battleworn
  • gets to travel through that lost woods type place and fight his younger self…and also hugs him
  • very tightly
  • he fights and frees zelda as well, who sees that he's pushing himself too hard--he's dirty and his knuckles are bruised and bleeding, despite doing mostly sword work. he's reaching his limit
  • zelda refuses to let him go alone, and walks him to a place that's blocked off by rubble
  • they do some triforce bullshit and break the rocks down, and there's the shrine of the master sword
  • but there's someone guarding it and guess who!!!
  • it's cloud!!!
  • he rises like a puppet and fights link, and link's heart aches but if he can awaken all those fighters before him, surely beating the shit out of cloud will awaken him
  • he knocks him out and immediately runs to his side, strokes his face, begs him to wake up
  • cloud blearily opens his eyes: "l…link?"
  • they hug each other so tight under the glow of the shrine and it's touching and gay
this has been sitting for a couple days but it's a dirty proof of concept, as another idea caught my eye that i actaully started writing (hint: it's the fucking TAM thing). oh well! i have a ton of limit breaker 'verse ideas that i ought to write down too instead of keep in my head
